Wrexham Glyndwr University Students Celebrate Their Victorious Varsity Win
Wrexham students have been celebrating their victorious Varsity win against Chester.
Wrexham Glyndwr University’s Student Guild hosted this year’s Varsity event on Saturday, May 7 against University of Chester’s Warrington campus.
Marc Caldecott, President of Wrexham Glyndwr University’s Student Guild, said: “It was a hot day and the atmosphere on campus was fierce.
“It was amazing to see two universities creating friendships even though there was rivalry.
“The highlight of the day for me was the Futsal as we did not expect to win against Chester Warrington’s strongest team.”
This is the second year in a row Wrexham Glyndwr University has won the event against Chester’s Warrington students.
The day included competitions in netball, volleyball, hockey, football, futsal, rugby, pool and badminton with Glyndwr winning nine out of 11 games.
Marc added: “Varsity has become a highlight in the student calendar and we were delighted to have been joined by the Vice Chancellor Maria Hinfelaar and Finance Director David Elcock.
“Wrexham Glyndwr students behaved very professionally and I was really proud of each one of them.
“When University of Chester players were badly injured, Glyndwr students stayed with them and assisted in First Aid. It is days like Varsity that make me really proud to have graduated here and to be President of the Student’s Guild.”
Singing the students praises Professor Hinfelaar said: “It was a pleasure to see the university do so well on Saturday and be part of such a successful event.
“Congratulations to all the students involved and well done to the Student Guild for organising a fantastic day and helping create a fun atmosphere for everyone.
“It was also great to see Wrexham and Chester Warrington students put aside sport rivalry and build on creating friendships.”
Students playing football and rugby had the chance to play their matches on the Wrexham Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium with other games held in the sports hall and all-weather pitch.
At the end of the fun-packed day Professor Hinfelaar presented the winning university with the Varsity trophy.
