Counterfeit money warning
North Wales Police are investigating four incidents of counterfeit currency being tendered at businesses in the Anglesey and Bethesda areas.
The incidents have been reported over the past month where counterfeit Scottish £20 notes have been offered.
Community Safety Sergeant Ian Roberts said: “Although counterfeit currency is rare, local officers are asking businesses to be vigilant and to raise awareness of these incidents with their respective staff.”
“As counterfeit notes pose no monetary value, by raising vigilance this will assist in ensuring businesses are not at a financial loss. Such notes can be part of organised criminal activity and each note will be treated as evidence towards the bigger picture.”
Advice on what you should do if you get a counterfeit banknote
- Retain the suspect note without putting staff at risk
- Give the customer a receipt, explaining that the note will be handed to the police.
- Call North Wales Police on 101. North Wales Police will send the suspect note to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Counterfeit notes are subsequently sent to the Bank of England for analysis.
