European Speed Awareness Campaign To Begin

A crackdown on speeding motorists is set to take place throughout north Wales next week. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

North Wales Police will be taking part in a European-wide initiative to crack down on speeding motorists from Monday, April 18th to Sunday April 24th. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The TISPOL (European Traffic Police Network) campaign will see police forces across Europe tackling speeding by conducting random speed checks. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

North Wales Police Roads Policing Officers along with Go Safe will be combining their efforts to deter and detect motorists who choose to ignore the speed limits. Drivers who are caught speeding will be issued with anything from a TOR (Traffic Offence Report) to a summons to attend court. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Every day on UK roads an average of 5 people will die and 65 will be seriously injured in collisions where speed may be a factor. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Chief Inspector Darren Wareing from North Wales Police’ Roads Policing Unit said: “We want to work with drivers and that is why we are giving advance notice of this week-long operation. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Speeding is an issue that concerns many residents and one that we take extremely seriously. It is also one of the ‘Fatal 5’ offences that we rigorously enforce. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Those who choose to ignore the speed limits can expect to be prosecuted for their actions.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

During the week officers will also be patrolling and monitoring speeds on the route known as the ‘EVO Triangle’ in Denbighshire – an area which is of concern to may local residents. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

C.I Wareing added: “We are fully aware of the concerns surrounding the EVO triangle route and have met with local residents to address their concerns. This is an area which is regularly policed, is already a designated ‘Go Safe’ route and features in ongoing all Wales Operation Darwen – a seasonal campaign aimed at reducing the number of deaths on the roads. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Last weekend officers from the Roads Policing Unit were on patrol in the area when they came across a man driving at excess speed. He failed the roadside drug swipe test after testing positive for cannabis and he was arrested. We have also recently spoken to several motorists in the area with regards to their speeds. Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) have been issued and vehicles have also been seized due to having no insurance. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
