Preventing Vehicle Crime Across North Wales
Owners of insecure vehicles and vehicles identified as being vulnerable to thefts will be targeted by North Wales Police, as part of an ongoing campaign.
Following a spate of thefts from insecure vehicles across the force area Police Community Support Officers and Volunteer Police Cadets will be working to identify vulnerable vehicles that have valuable items on display.
Those found to be unlocked or to contain valuable items on display will receive a leaflet informing them of the particular vulnerability along with crime prevention advice.
“This is about educating vehicle owners,” said Sergeant Ian Roberts, from the Western Area Community Safety Team.
“The majority of vehicle crime is avoidable. Opportunist thieves will target vehicles, especially when items are left on display, because they know they will get something out of it.”
A number of vehicles were targeted in the West End of Rhyl over the weekend and within a 2 hour patrol of Bangor officers found a passport, cash, high value tools, electronic tablets and mobile phones clearly on display in vehicles.
Inspector Insp Alwyn Williams said: “It only takes seconds to ensure your vehicle is locked, that windows are tightly closed, and that valuable items are either removed or hidden out of sight to take away the opportunity.”
Operation Haywire will operate in the Western area of the force and Sgt Roberts added: “This scheme provides us with the opportunity to educate vehicle owners. If items are removed from vehicles, so too is the temptation to break in to the car to steal from it.”
If you know of someone who is committing car crime, or involved with the selling of stolen goods, please contact North Wales Police on 101.
