Volunteer Cadets Meet The Dog Section
A group of Volunteer Police Cadets, based in Bangor, recently received a special visit from the Dog Section.
The Cadets, who are aged between 14 and 16-years-old, were visited last week by PC Gordon Topps and PD Dougie from North Wales Police’ Dog Section.
The group, who meet every Thursday at Coleg Menai’s site in Bangor, were given a presentation on the work of the Unit and also met PC Topps’ retired dog, Cyrus.
Sergeant Ian Roberts, who volunteers with the cadets each week said: “The Volunteer Police Cadets are a uniformed youth organisation, who offer a wide range of exciting challenges and opportunities. In turn the young people get to try new experiences, make new friends and enjoy working in the community.
“It was a great opportunity for them to meet PD Dougie. They asked the handler some great questions and were keen to learn more about the work of our four-legged colleagues.”
Following the input, the cadets had the opportunity to see PD Dougie in action.
PD Dougie is three and a half years-old and is one of North Wales Police’ General Purpose dogs. His handler, PC Gordon Topps, along with Sergeant Ian Roberts, are both police volunteers, who provide their spare time to deliver the sessions.
The group meet weekly and follow a national programme of leadership, team building and an introduction to police studies. The team also volunteer at public events and are mostly dependable on charitable donations.
The Cadets began their two-year programme in September 2015. Volunteer Police Cadets are also based in Rhyl and Deeside.
