Discount Deal Tempting Parents To Choose ‘Real Nappies’
Nearly 140,000 nappies will be diverted from landfill over the next two and a half years thanks to the parents in Bridgend County Borough who have already snapped up a 50 per cent discount on ‘real nappy’ starter kits.
Bridgend County Borough Council has teamed up with ‘The Nappy Gurus – Bridgend’ to subsidise starter kits so that they can be bought for £25 instead of the RRP of £50, and nearly 30 families have taken advantage of the deal so far.
Among the local Mums persuaded to choose reusable nappies over disposables is Sian Bevington, who said: “I wanted to use real nappies from the start but my husband didn’t want the extra work for me while looking after our baby.
“But because of the half price starter pack he agreed to try it. We both fell in love with reusable nappies and two days after receiving our pack we placed an order to change our baby girl Caitlyn, now 15 months, into reusable nappies. It was the best decision we have made.
“They are easy to use, easy to clean and, best yet, she doesn’t get nappy rash while wearing them. Obviously the money we will save is also great. We are expecting our little boy soon and he will be going straight into reusable nappies.”
The starter packs contain three ‘real nappies’ and accessories, and the discounted offer is available for all local residents who are pregnant or have a child under three years of age.
Councillor Ceri Reeves, the council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “With children needing an average of 5,520 nappy changes before they’re potty trained, that’s a huge amount of nappies that end up in landfill.
“Then there’s obviously the cost of all those nappies too. Real nappies offer a much cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative so I would encourage parents to give them a try.”
Bryher Hill, who runs the local ‘Nappy Gurus’ franchise in Bridgend, said: “Using real nappies can be quite daunting to begin with, and people can sometimes be put off by the initial outlay to buy them, but once you get into a routine they’re fantastic. And, thanks to the council’s support, it is now much cheaper to buy a starter pack.”
To buy a discounted ‘real nappy’ starter pack, proof of pregnancy / age of child (MATB1 form or birth certificate) and proof of address will be required to confirm eligibility as your child must be under three-years-old and live in Bridgend County Borough.
