Proposal To Increase Capacity At Afon Y Felin Primary School

With Afon Y Primary School going from strength to strength, Bridgend County Borough Council is making plans to increase the school’s capacity. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cabinet Members from the council have agreed to begin public consultation over a proposal to make a ‘regulated alteration’ so that the school’s intake at the reception age group rises from 15 to 18 pupils from 1 April 2017 onwards. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The school has room to accommodate greater numbers without any building work being needed, and the knock-on effect would lead to the school’s overall capacity increasing to 131 pupils between the ages of four and 11. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s new Leader, said: “I have been delighted to see the major turnaround at Afon Y Felin in the past couple of years. From being a school that was rated by Estyn as needing significant improvement, it is now a school where more parents than ever before want to send their children, and this proposal will help to meet the predicted demand for places at the school in future years. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

In June 2015, Estyn inspectors noted that outstanding progress had been made at Afon Y Felin since its last full inspection report in 2013, while earlier this year the school achieved the yellow category status in the Welsh Government’s colour coded categorisation system. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
