Residents Invited To Find Out If They Could ‘Be A Councillor’
Community-spirited members of the public are being invited to discover whether they could become a county borough councillor ahead of next year’s local elections.
Bridgend County Borough Council is encouraging local residents to find out if they have got what it takes to represent their local community at special ‘Be a councillor’ events, which are being held at the Civic Offices, Bridgend from 6pm on 11 and 12 October.
The FREE events, which are being held as part of Local Democracy Week, are designed to encourage residents from all backgrounds to get involved in local politics, and attendees will have the opportunity to talk to BCBC councillors and staff to find out more about the role.
Suitable for members of political parties, independent candidates and those with no political experience, the events will cover the role of a BCBC councillor, how different departments within the council function, and how individuals can stand for election in May 2017.
Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, Councillor Mel Nott OBE said: “These events are a great chance for residents to find out exactly how they could contribute in their local communities as a county borough councillor.
“People are often quite surprised just how much time goes into being a county borough councillor. It’s a challenging role, but the opportunity it provides to make a real difference to people’s lives is hugely rewarding.
“Personally, it’s been a privilege representing the county borough for more than 20 years, and I’ll look back on my time as both councillor and council Leader with pride after I stand down in May.
“I hope that anyone who attends these events will share the same pride if they are lucky enough to be elected as a councillor next year.”
Spaces for the ‘Be a councillor’ events are limited and must be booked in advanced.
