Sports Clubs Invited To Mark Somme Centenary

Sports clubs across Bridgend County Borough are being invited to take part in a two minutes’ silence before any fixtures on the weekend of September 17/18 to commemorate the role played by local sportsmen who fought during the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Royal British Legion has approached local authorities around the country to ask for their support on the initiative, and Councillor Mel Nott, the Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, said: “We feel that this would be a fitting way to mark the centenary of this historic battle which involved many local servicemen, and we hope that as many local clubs as possible can join in with this tribute.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

John Crowdrey, the Chair of the Bridgend Branch of British Legion said: “This is a national campaign where The Royal British Legion is calling on sporting organisations, associations, clubs, teams and individuals to commemorate the role played by sportsmen on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It is important that the county borough comes together and I would encourage every sporting club and association within the borough to commit to honouring those who fought in the Somme.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
