Museum Of Trethomas Opens
Tyn Y Wern Primary School has opened the doors to their Museum of Trethomas and it has proved very popular.
As part of an extra-curricular club, year 5 and 6 pupils, at Tyn Y Wern Primary, have been busy researching and collecting information for their Museum project.
The exhibits focus on four main categories, World War I, World War II, the local Colliery and the history of Tyn Y Wern Primary.
The children adopted their tour guide roles and led the public through their Museum, showing the various artefacts and historical school photos on display.
After the success of last year’s project into Bedwas Workmen’s Hall, the school has decided to enter the Welsh Heritage Awards competition for another year.
The competition is run by the Welsh Heritage School Initiative, which aims to encourage young people in schools in Wales, to take more interest in their heritage within their communities. The competition helps advance the children’s education and understand how to preserve their heritage.
Caroline ap Hywel, History Co-Ordinator said: “The Museum project has really inspired the children and given them a holistic learning experience reaching far beyond the classroom. Not only have they significantly enhanced their historical knowledge and understanding, they have also developed their Literacy and Numeracy skills within a rich real-life context.”
The children are hoping for their 7th consecutive win, with the awards announced in July at Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum.
