Supporting Olympians In Rio

Rhys Shorney, a physiotherapist from Cardiff University, will be supporting the British Olympic swimming team at the Rio Olympics this August. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhys said: “Having previously worked for British Swimming I have an excellent relationship with them and Swim Wales, providing regular services to both. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Swimming is a key sport in Wales from both a mass participation perspective and in regards to big competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. I look forward to providing support throughout this year’s Olympics and wish our team the best of luck.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A graduate of Cardiff University, Rhys works as a lecturer within its School of Healthcare Sciences and is also clinical lead for its sports injury service ‘Inspire Performance’, which is located in the Talybont Sports Village and specialises in sports injury management. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhys previously worked for British Swimming, helping to look after the senior British team at camps and competitions. During that period, he attended two world championships with British Swimming, the Commonwealth Games with Team Wales, and was selected to attend the London Olympics as part of Team GB. In addition to these benchmark competitions, he has attended multiple national and international competitions with the team, worked with Sport Wales and British Disability Swimming and held a lead physiotherapy role with Swim Wales. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Rio Olympic Games in Brazil run from the 5 August to 21 August 2016. Wales has qualified four swimmers to the Olympic squad – two of which are based in Cardiff. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
