Distraction Burglary – Llanthewy Road, Newport
Gwent Police is appealing for information after a distraction burglary on Llanthewy Road, Newport on Wednesday 6th April 2016 at approximately 11:30am to 12:00pm.
The homeowner is a vulnerable, elderly lady living alone.
The offender is said to be an unknown male, who attended the address wearing a fluorescent workman’s jacket with a hand held device stating he was there to read the gas/electric meter.
The victim allowed him in and he pretended to look at the downstairs meter whilst asking if she lived alone.
He then said he would need to look at the upstairs meter, which the lady allowed him to but was unable to accompany him as she is unable to climb the stairs.
Later the victim’s family were immediately concerned as they knew the meter man had already been a few weeks ago.
On checking upstairs they have found the drawers and cupboards open and searches have been made.
From house to house enquiries it appears the suspect may have also knocked on two other doors in the area but the occupants were not as vulnerable.
