Extensive Socialisation And Environmental Training To Prepare Him For Life As A K9 Cop
North Wales Police’s latest four legged apprentice has sadly been unsuccessful in the selection process used to recruit new Police dogs.
Vader was donated to the force at two months old, and for the last 9 months, has been preparing for life as a Police dog. But with a heavy heart, the decision was made that he was not the dog for the job.
Sgt Howard Watts of the dog section says “For the last 9 months, Vader has undergone extensive socialisation and environmental training to prepare him for life as a K9 Cop.”
“However, as we worked through the process it became apparent that unfortunately Vader doesn’t have the temperament to be a general purpose Police dog.”
Howard must ensure that all dogs perform to the Police dog standard, and it was clear to him during training that Vader could not compete with the standard at which the current dogs are performing.
He added “What is paramount to us is the welfare of the dog. In this instance, our priority was to find Vader a good home once the decision had been made that he would not be joining our team.”
North Wales Police has a list of potential owners that we match our retired and unsuccessful dogs to. Vader was taken to his new forever home on Sunday and is settling into his new life.
North Wales Police will be receiving two Malinois puppies in August who will hopefully replace Vader and Police dog Molly, who retired a few days ago.
#PDVader has been a clear favourite on our K9 Cops Facebook page, and will be missed by his dedicated followers.
We will be provided with updates from Vader’s life in his new home, so be sure to keep an eye out for him on the North Wales Police K9 Cops Facebook page.
