Father And Son Jailed For Rogue Trader Offences

A father and son from Rumney, Cardiff have been sentenced in Cardiff Crown Court today for rogue trader offences. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Jeffrey Tawse, 52, was convicted of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Gwent Police worked with Scambuster Wales on a two-year investigation into the pair’s activities and discovered that between August 2011 and September 2014, they claimed to work as representatives of Premier Drives, J&R South West Power Washing, General Landscape Gardening, General Jetwashing Services and Premier Jetwashing Services. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

All these “businesses” were unregistered while addresses and contact details supplied to consumers on documentation and invoices were false. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Fifteen people, aged between 50 and 97, were affected across nine council areas – Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent, Carmarthen, Cardiff, Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil, Torfaen and RCT. Together they lost more than £70,000. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

DC Hannah Lawton said: “This was a lengthy investigation involving individuals who deliberately targeted vulnerable people in our communities. These men showed no remorse for the suffering they caused, their only concern was how much money they could get from their elderly victims. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We were shocked by what we discovered. The two men used aggressive sales tactics to intimidate elderly and vulnerable people into having work carried out. We found examples of poor standards, overcharging and even work not being carried out. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Officers are reminding residents to always say ‘no’ to any traders who unexpectedly turn up on your doorstep offering to carry out work. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

If you are getting work done on your home… ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

– always get written quotes from at least two reputable traders for any work ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

– always agree the price, payment arrangements and start/finish dates in writing before any work starts ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

– don’t pay in full until you’re completely satisfied with the work ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

– make sure your home and belongings are kept safe and secure during works. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
