Newport homeowner conned by online advert

This article is old - Published: Tuesday, May 24th, 2016

On Sunday the 1st of May 2016 at approximately 2:00pm two men delivered a washing machine to an address on Constable Drive in Newport. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The homeowner was led to believe via the advert online they had purchased a good condition second hand white good. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Once the men dropped off the machine they left the address quickly in a small white van. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

However, when the wrapping was removed the washing machine delivered is believed to be a scrapped machine which was in very bad condition. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The victim has tried to make contact with the seller but the number on the advert rings through to an answerphone message. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact Gwent police on 101 quoting log 310 01/05/16. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Anyone who believes they have been victim of fraud, whether it be online, over the phone or face to face is urged to report it to police or Action Fraud straight away. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Fraudsters can target anyone, so by working alongside a national reporting centre we are in a much stronger position to tackle fraud locally and ultimately bring more offenders to justice. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
