Over 150 Vehicles Stopped By Gwent Police, As Officers Target Illegal Drivers In Newport
On Monday 17th October 2016 Gwent Police had a day of action along the M4 in Newport.
The operation came as part of Modern Day Slavery Week, in a bid to tackle the perpetrators and offer support to victims of slavery.
Officers on the day worked closely with colleagues from Trading Standards, VOSA, DVLA, DWP and licensing officers from local councils.
Together they have been gathering intelligence, visiting businesses, carrying out patrols, and conducting vehicle checks across Gwent.
Results from the enforcement day include:
152 Vehicles stopped and checked.
Arrests
· One person arrested for being wanted on a warrant.
· Two arrested for drug driving.
· Three arrested for shoplifting offences.
· One arrested for possession of a class B drug.
Vehicle seizures
· Eight for driving without insurance.
· Seven for driving without a licence.
· One for using red diesel.
Drivers reported for no licence and/or Insurance
· 17 reported in total for no insurance/driving licence.
Vehicle proibitions/taken off the road for defects
· Six vehicles for defective brakes.
· Twelve vehicles for defective tyres.
· Three vehicles for defective number plates.
· Three vehicles for defective suspension.
· Six vehicles with defective lights.
· Three vehicles with defective axles.
· Two vehicles with defective body panels.
· One vehicle with defective exhaust system.
· Three defective trailers.
· Three vehicles used without a Tachograph.
· Three driving documents “producers” issued.
Other Offences
· Four drivers reported for no MOT.
· One reported for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
· Two drivers fined for not paying levy/duty.
· Three vehicles evading fuel duty, two drivers fined £1100.00.
· Several persons of interest for tax evasion.
Police Sergeant Leighton Healan said: ‘These results are giving us a more accurate picture of the extent of those who flout the laws whilst driving.
Those who get behind the wheel with a vehicle that is not road worthy not only put their own lives and passengers at risk, but also those of innocent pedestrians and other motorists.
Driving is a privilege and not a right. We will stop you. Think about what that would mean for you.
The action day has uncovered many drivers who continue to ignore the laws in place and we want this to be a lesson to all to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive or we will take action against you.
Although the day didn’t disclose any signs of slavery we would urge the public if you suspect slavery is happening near you please report it to police on 101 or if it’s an emergency always dial 999.
