Schools Help To Catch Speeders
Gwent Police officers have taken year 6 pupils from Alway Primary School on an adventure to stop speeders.
In groups the 10 and 11 year olds got to hold handheld speed guns on Aberthaw Road to help officers check who was breaking the 20mph limit.
The youngsters also got to sit inside a police car which was fitted with ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) to see how it works in action. They were then taught the law about drink driving and showed how breathalysers are used.
Back in the classroom the pupils put their speeding figures to good use by using them for maths calculations.
CSO Alexander Donne says “We found the whole experience beneficial to increasing road safety amongst younger people. We would like to take the opportunity to remind motorists of the 20mph speed limit that is around most of the schools.”
