Update: Incident in Malpas

At approximately 1.20pm this afternoon, we received a call from a local shop in Malpas, Newport, regarding a suspicious item left in their store. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As a precautionary measure, shops in the area were evacuated and the shopping precinct on Malpas Road was closed to customers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Specialist trained personnel from the Army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Unit have now assessed the device, believed to be a World War II grenade. It has been deemed as low risk and has been safely removed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The police cordon was lifted at 3.30pm. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
