Update: Incident in Malpas

At approximately 1.20pm this afternoon, we received a call from a local shop in Malpas, Newport, regarding a suspicious item left in their store.
As a precautionary measure, shops in the area were evacuated and the shopping precinct on Malpas Road was closed to customers.
Specialist trained personnel from the Army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Unit have now assessed the device, believed to be a World War II grenade. It has been deemed as low risk and has been safely removed.
The police cordon was lifted at 3.30pm.
