New Classrooms and Sports Hall Proposed at Caerleon Comprehensive School to Replace Dated Facilities

New classrooms and a sports hall look set for approval at Caerleon Comprehensive School to replace “dated” and “undersized” facilities.
Newport City Council planners describe parts of the existing school as being in a “poor physical condition” and argue there is “clear merit” in knocking down some of the worst affected areas.
In their place, a new two-storey block will contain a new sports hall, changing rooms, fitness suite, PE classroom and storage area on the ground floor.
Upstairs, there are plans for specialist music classrooms, a drama studio, performing arts space and four other general classrooms.
A council report said it wants to build a “fit for purpose replacement learning block and sports facilities… to provide a modern learning environment whilst also offering a facility that the local community can use and benefit from”.
The council added the project, which also includes upgrades to other existing areas, is not aimed at increasing the number of pupils at a school where there are currently around 1,500 children on the roll.
Members of the council’s planning committee are due to discuss and vote on the application – which officers have recommended for approval – at a meeting on Wednesday March 4.
