Box Of Used Syringes Found At Recycling Centre
Pembrokeshire County Council is appealing to those who dispose of surgical syringes to do so correctly and safely through the proper channels.
It follows the discovery of a sharps box containing between 25 and 30 used syringes at the Waterloo Recycling Centre, Pembroke Dock.
The box of syringes had been hidden in a carrier bag and placed in the general waste skip.
It was not noticed at the time but was found shortly afterwards by a member of staff working for a contractor handling the Council’s waste.
“Used syringes can present a very serious health hazard and it is illegal to dispose of them with normal household waste,” said Richard Brown, Head of Environment and Civil Contingencies.
“It is not acceptable that our local refuse collection staff should come across used syringes during their work.
They are considered clinical waste, and should be placed in a sharps box and disposed of at a local hospital or pharmacy.”
Individuals who use syringes should know through their GP or Pharmacist where they can get sharps boxes for their safe disposal.
If people find a syringe in a public area, they should report it to Pembrokeshire County Council’s Contact Centre on 01437 764551 where staff can arrange for its correct disposal.
