Maintenance works underway to ensure safety of disused coal tip in the Rhondda

Maintenance works to keep a coal tip in the Rhondda safe are taking place over the coming weeks.
Works are happening over the fortnight ahead as part of the routine maintenance of the disused Penyrenglyn Tip site in the Rhondda, Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council has confirmed.
The former coal tip is located generally to the north of Jones Street and to the east of Charles Street, Ynysfeio Avenue and Herbert Street.
The work which includes routine vegetation clearance began in the week commencing Monday, August 3 and will last for a fortnight.
It will see the removal of vegetation around drainage channels and culverts, ensuring the drainage assets are maintained and the risk of blockages is reduced.
The scheme, being delivered by the RCT streetcare team, will also maintain access for future tip inspections and maintenance activity, by removing vegetation at key locations.
The council says that ecology has been an important consideration in this scheme’s design with habitat management enhancing biodiversity by maintaining open habitat corridors across the site.
The authority adds that minimal overall disruption is expected for the community during the upcoming works, with limited noise disturbance expected.
The council says residents may also notice a small increase in construction traffic between working hours, from 8am-5pm on Mondays to Fridays.
The scheme has received funding through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant in 2026/27.
