Young People Commended For Their Achievements

Dedicated young people who have embraced the support on offer to help them reach their own personal goals have been commended in the first-of-its-kind ASDAN awards ceremony. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Children and young people aged from 9 and 15, who live across the county borough, were celebrated for working with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Disabled Children’s Team – and their parents and support workers – to reach targets specific to them. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They were presented with their awards by Cllr Geraint Hopkins, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Services, Equality and the Welsh Language, at an event in Hawthorn Leisure Centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The awards mark the hard work that has gone into the children and young people’s achievements, which saw them work with the Disabled Children’s Team, their parents and peers to access activities and tasks in their own communities to work towards a specific outcome. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They also signal the beginning of a brighter, more confident future for the young people, as the confidence they secure achieving their personal goals allows them to continue to grow and thrive. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Each outcome the young person agreed was personal to them and involved activities such as accessing public transport, shopping, money management and other milestones. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The awards were presented as part of the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) which provides the framework under which the outcomes were set and assessed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Hopkins said: “It was an honour to be invited to attend the event and present the young people with awards to mark what they have achieved and also celebrate their plans for the future. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Many of the outcomes they set themselves, which were achieved with the important support of their families and our Disabled Children’s Team, are everyday tasks that many other people take for granted. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“But for the children and young people we are committed to supporting, these were milestones on their way to independent living. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Our Disabled Children’s Team is a service that allows children and young people to access activities within their own communities and peer groups so they can work towards their own personal goals. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The outcome is agreed at the beginning of the process and the young person and their parents play an active role in the planning and review process, which results in the ASDAN accreditations I presented today. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Well done to each and every one of the children and young people who were awarded today and also to their parents and the Council Disabled Children’s Team, who are supporting them on their journeys.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Those who were rewarded were: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cicely Holcombe, aged 17, from Taffs Well, who undertook travel training to ensure she could get out and about safely and independently. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Elliot Bailey, aged 10, of Pontyclun, who attended important Touch Trust sensory sessions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Emlyn Pendragon, 11, of Pontyclun, who secured money skills ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Joshua Hughes, 11, of Clydach, who learned how to bowl. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Harley Fisher, 11, of Pontypridd, who enjoyed swimming. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Matthew Mitchell, 14, of Pontypridd, who attended Touch Trust sensory sessions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhiannon Noble, 14, of Pontyclun, who learned money skills. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Sean Patterson, aged 15 of Pontypridd, who improved his confidence in the community. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Tyler Hughes, 16, of Aberdare, who learned money skills. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Yusuf Khalid, 9, of Mountain Ash, who learned healthy activities. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Aleisha Darlington, 15, of Pentre, who learned preparation for cooking and collecting ingredients and equipment. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Bethan Williams, aged 14, of Porth, who attained fitness activities and learned about paying for activities. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Chloe Williams, 14, of Blaencwm, who learned about preparing for cooking and collecting ingredients. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Daniel Brain, 15, of Mountain Ash, who achieved trying new activities and meeting new people. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Holly Speake, 14, of Treorchy who achieved packing a bag for swimming and paying for swimming. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Connor Edwards, 14, of Tonypandy, who caught the bus, enjoyed gym sessions and undertook nurture bowling and E3 extra curricular activities ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Owen Morris, 15, of Aberdare was awarded the Bronze Award for attaining gym sessions, football skills and money management, as well as travelling on the bus. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
