BBQ Bins Installed At Two Popular Local Beaches

Beach-goers will have the chance to dispose of their barbecue waste in specially-constructed bins at two of our city’s beaches this summer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Beaches are great places to relax, eat and have fun all day long but waste from disposable and standard barbecues can be a health risk to children in particular. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

That’s why Swansea Council and Mumbles Community Council have joined forces to introduce the fire-proof bins in time for the hot summer months when beach barbecues are at their most popular. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Two have just been installed at the popular Langland Beach with another at Rotherslade, where they’ll be available throughout the season until the end of September. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The bins will help prevent open fires on beaches which cause damage to the sea. They will also help reduce the risk of accidents associated with disposable barbecues, including burns caused by hot coals buried just under the surface of the sand. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “It is important not to litter our beaches. We’re lucky to have them at our disposal, so we should be keeping them safe and clean for everyone. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Our beaches are among our finest attractions and we want people to walk on the sand and enjoy their time out without worrying whether they’ll be injured.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Helen Mitchell, Chairman of Mumbles Community Council, said: “We are fortunate enough to have some stunning beaches within the Mumbles Community Council area. These beaches are used by both visitors and locals and it’s important to keep them clean for everyone to enjoy. We hope that provision of these special BBQ bins will help.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
