New Music Service Offer Hits The Right Note With Schools
Hundreds of pupils across Swansea will have access to high quality music tuition from September thanks to their school signing up to the city’s music service.
Figures released today show almost 90 per cent of secondary schools and over 70 per cent of primary schools have already signed-up to what will be a new Swansea Council service replacing the former joint West Glamorgan Music Service.
Jen Raynor, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “September will bring a new era for school music services in Swansea and I am delighted the vast majority of schools have signed up.
“We aim to reward their show of confidence in our service by building on the existing provision to further to meet their expectations and their aspirations for their pupils.
“We also hope more schools will join them in future as we make the service stronger and demonstrate its professional approach is better than anything other music service providers can offer.”
News of the high uptake from schools follows decisions last month by Neath Port Talbot and Swansea councils to de-couple the West Glamorgan Music Service and set up separate music services.
The way the system works nationally is that schools make their own decisions on purchasing music tuition provision from their budgets. They can choose music services from a council-run service under what’s called a service level agreement (SLA).
So far 56 primary schools and 12 secondary schools in Swansea have agreed Service Level Agreements to receive a music service from the Swansea Council schools music service from September. Schools who have not done so yet are still able to buy in at a later date.
Swansea Council has pledged funding support for the school music service while the review takes place and a new service is established.
