Walking Festival Takes In Gems Of Blaenavon World Heritage Site
The Wales Valleys Walking Festival returns for its twelfth year this month, with 18 walks across the South Wales Valleys.
Three walks take place in the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, giving visitors a unique opportunity to explore the globally important industrial landscape.
‘Blaenavon – Industrial Town to Nature Reserve’ takes place on Tuesday 6 September and is a three hour, five mile walk taking in the former ironworks community of Forgeside, the Big Pit National Coal Museum, the Coity spoil tip and local nature reserve of Garn Lakes.
The walk starts from the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre at 2pm and is an easy walk, suitable for most people.
‘Moorland, Manufacturing and Mining’ take place on Wednesday 7 September and is a six hour, eight mile walk from Keepers Pond across the moorland to the Steel Incline and Hills Tramroad, taking in views over the Usk Valley, the Garndyrus Forge and other remains of the area’s industrial past.
It starts at 10am from the Keepers Pond Car Park and requires a good level of fitness due to some steep sections.
The ‘Llanfoist to Govilon Circular Walk’ on Thursday 15 September is a two hour, two and a half mile circular walk following the old railway line and canal towing path, exploring the lower part of the incredible Llanfoist Incline.
