The Director-General of the UK’s largest business organisation – the CBI – paid a visit to the University of South Wales (USW) today to see the work of its National Cyber Security Academy (NCSA).
Carolyn Fairbairn, who became Director-General in 2015, visited the University’s Newport City Campus, home to the NCSA, which welcomed its first cohort of students last October.
Working with the Welsh Government and major industry partners, the NCSA offers a specialist degree in Applied Cyber Security that will focus on developing students’ expertise in the field, helping to plug the skills gap that is growing every year.
The Director-General said: “Adopting effective cyber security is fundamental to the success of all businesses in the digital era. Government and businesses must work together to upskill the market in cyber security and to accelerate the efforts of the market to protect itself against online threats.
“The University of South Wales is playing a significant role in equipping young people with the skills they need to get ahead and set them on the path to successful careers.”
Dr Lucy Meredith, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, added: “We are delighted that the Director-General was able to visit us, and see our important work in developing the next generation of cyber security experts.
“The NCSA is addressing the growing need for graduates with hands-on skills to fight cyber threats, and putting students and industry together will help us come up with solutions to these challenges.”
