Students Across The Vale Of Glamorgan Continue To Achieve Best-Ever Grades

25.6% of students sitting WJEC GCSE examinations achieved the highest possible grades of A/A*, up from 24.7% last year, maintaining strong gains against the Welsh average of 19.4%. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

72.7% Students achieved A*-C grades, which is over 6% above the Welsh average, at 66.6%. 99% of all pupils sitting this year’s WJEC examinations achieved A*-E grades. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The results from all examination boards also demonstrate continuous improvement across the Vale, with 66.6% of students achieving 5 A*- C grades, up from 64.9% in 2015. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A number of Vale schools secured their best ever results including St Cyres Comprehensive which had a record 70% of students achieving at least 5 GCSE’s at grades A*-C including English and Maths, showing strong progress with an increase of over 11% compared to 2015. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Barry Comprehensive also had record numbers with over 62% of students being awarded these grades, jumping up 12% from last year. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

St Richard Gwyn also saw a substantial increase in achievement, up 10% to 66%. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education, said: “These results are yet another success story for the Vale of Glamorgan’s schools. We have seen another year of improved results for pupils sitting GCSE examinations, with the pass rate once again above the national average. There have also been some real stand-out results at Barry Comprehensive and St Cyres School in Penarth. I would like to congratulate all of the young people who have collected their results today and the hardworking school staff who made it possible.
