MAWWFRS Issue Home Safety Advice Following Brecon Cottage Fire
On night (11/07/2016) at 6.40pm crews from Abercrave and Brecon attended a fire in a cottage in Brecon.
The fire, which was caused by a pan on the cooker, was out on arrival of firefighters, and had been extinguished by neighbours using domestic water supply. The crews were involved in clearing away, damping down hotspots, and carrying out hotstrike.
Unfortunately, 3 dogs passed away as a result of the fire.
With over half of accidental fires at home started by cooking incidents, MAWWFRS would like to issue the following general cooking safety information to the public:
- Take pans off the heat or turn the heat down if you’re called away from the cooker, eg by a phone call
- Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing as it can catch fire easily
- Don’t cook if you have been drinking alcohol or taken prescription drugs – you may get drowsy or lose concentration.
- Ensure that you always have a working smoke alarm.
