First Minister marks start of work at new £8m primary school in the Upper Rhymney Valley
The new state-of-the art school demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to providing the best school facilities for the children that need it most, First Minister Carwyn Jones said today.
The First Minister attended the turf cutting ceremony today [Thursday 15 December 2016] to mark the start of the construction of the new replacement school for Abertysswg and Pontlottyn Primary Schools.
The Welsh Government has committed £4m for the new school, which will provide facilities including a nursery, Flying Start centre, extra curricular garden club and an amphitheatre, when it opens in January 2018.
The Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme represents a total investment of £1.4bn to rebuild and refurbish 150 schools and colleges across Wales.
To date, the Welsh Government has earmarked £28.75m to improve school facilities in Caerphilly.
The First Minister said:
“I am pleased to see construction get underway at the new primary school in the Upper Rhymney Valley. This significant investment will provide pupils with a range of cutting-edge facilities that will boost their school experience.
“The new state-of-the-art school will provide modern classrooms and facilities to be enjoyed by pupils and their teachers. The school’s new integrated children centre will also offer wraparound childcare and after-school provision to help working parents and those looking to return to work.”
