Changes To Permit Conditions For Cardiff Laboratory

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has revised the environmental permit of a radiochemical laboratory in East Moors, Cardiff. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Quotient Bioresearch develop radioactive materials for use in hospitals and research facilities. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Anyone that stores or operates radioactive waste must have an environmental permit from NRW. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Changes in environmental legislation and government policy means that NRW also regulate the non-radioactive aspects of radioactive waste, and that Quotient must therefore comply with three new improvement conditions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The changes to the environmental permit are to do with the small incinerator at their site in Splott, Cardiff. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The variation came into force on June 30 and does not change the amount or nature of the radioactive materials used on the site. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Llinos Owen, Natural Resources Wales, Senior Permitting Officer, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It is important that activity of this kind does not harm the environment or the health of those that live close by.”
“Our officers will regulate and monitor the site to ensure it complies with the conditions of the permit to protect people and the environment.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Quotient Bioresearch received the original permit in 2010. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
