Hundreds Of Fish Found Dead In Powys River

We’re appealing for information following a pollution incident that killed hundreds of fish near Llansantffraid-ym-Mechan, Powys yesterday (Friday 12 August). ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Our officers are continuing to investigate the incident, after a concerned member of the public reported seeing dead fish. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

This has led to the discovery of an estimated 500 dead fish on the river Cain, a tributary of the river Vyrnwy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

We have taken water samples to check for signs of pollution and will also carry out post-mortems to attempt to identify the cause of the fish kill. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Our rivers provide a home to rich, diverse and valuable species of plants and animals so it’s important to deal with pollution as quickly as possible. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It’s likely that over 500 fish may have been killed on this stretch of river Cain. Our investigations into the cause are on-going. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“There is no obvious sign of pollution and the water appears clear, but we’ll continue to investigate over the weekend to attempt to identify the cause and to minimise further impact on wildlife. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
