Opening evenings for those interested in retained firefighter roles

A recruitment campaign for Retained Duty System (RDS) firefighters was launched earlier this month – and now North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is holding open evenings aimed at providing more information to those interested.
We are looking to recruit RDS firefighters at a number of locations to help protect communities across the region and are keen to hear from enthusiastic individuals interested in working as on-call firefighters at their local station.
If you would like to find out more, come along to one of our open evenings which will be held as follows – these are free events with no booking required;
19 April – Denbigh fire station 7pm
21 April – Deeside fire station 7pm
25 April – Porthmadog fire station 7pm
27 April – Llangefni fire station 7pm
Ruth Simmons, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, explained: “RDS firefighters provide essential fire and emergency cover for their fire station’s area. We are looking for suitable individuals, in particular those available during the day, who can travel to their local fire station within five minutes of being paged for a call out.
“These people may have other roles such as builders, shopkeepers, nurses, factory workers, stay-at-home parents or homeworkers during working hours but we would ask that, in addition, RDS firefighters are available to attend emergency incidents as and when required.
“Firefighters are fully trained, highly skilled personnel, saving lives and property from fire. RDS firefighters provide expertise at road, rail and aircraft accidents, chemical spillages, flooding, forest, heathland and mountain fires and agricultural accidents.
“We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, physically fit and can demonstrate common sense, commitment and dedication – and we are keen to recruit those who represent the diverse community that we serve.
“We provide close-knit, highly trained teams working with modern, hi-tech equipment. Recruits will also take part in the fire prevention work we carry out to prevent fires happening in our community.”
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is interested in hearing from interested individuals from across the whole of the North Wales region – although the first phase of this recruitment campaign will focus on fire stations at Betws Y Coed, Ruthin, Llanrwst, Denbigh, Buckley, Chirk, Holywell, Llangollen, Cerrigydrudion, Amlwch, Benllech, Llangefni, Dolgellau, Bala, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Porthmadog and Pwllheli.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. They must possess a good standard of physical fitness and have the ability to pass aptitude tests. In addition to their monthly retaining fees, payments are made for turnouts, attendance and drill nights.
Many employers are aware of the essential role that retained fire and rescue service personnel carry out within their local communities and many release staff to carry out firefighting and other emergency duties.
