MP Invites Glyndwr Journalism Students To The Palace Of Westminster For A Tour

Wrexham MP invited journalism students to visit his office in London and tour the Palace of Westminster. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

MP Ian Lucas welcomed Wrexham Glyndwr University students to Parliament on Tuesday to help with their Public Affairs module. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Students interviewed Mr Lucas to get an insight into his daily role. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

He said: “My first obligation is to my constituency. I split my time between London and Wrexham but I think my role is most effective when I bring the two together.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ian explained how he was recently approached by a family whose son’s disability benefits were cut but after he got involved the matter was dropped. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

He added: “I recounted the story about the disability cuts in the chamber to highlight what these new disability assessments are having on people and the issue is being followed up. “This shows by directly representing the constituency in parliament a Wrexham case can make an impact here in the London chamber.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Students also raised topical issues with the MP including Wrexham Councils’ vote in favour of housing five Syrian refugee families. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Lucas told the students: “It has been a long process between local and central government to get to this point with accepting refugees. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I am in favour of accepting these families into Wrexham and it’s not a great deal to ask on the great scale of things. I haven’t had anyone directly approach me who are against this but I have by those in favour.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The students also toured the Houses of Parliament and sat in the House of Commons to watch a debate. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Janet Jones, senior lecturer in Journalism and Media Communications, said: “It was fantastic day for all the students and a great opportunity to interview their local MP. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We would like to say a big thank you to Ian Lucas and his team for organising the day and putting the students’ political and journalism sessions into context.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Wrexham Glyndwr University’s employability programme A Degree Of Responsibility (ADOR) funded the trip to the Palace of Westminster. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Lucy Jones, ADOR project co-ordinator, said: “We are delighted to help our students learn and gain experience outside of the classroom on trips like this, as well as making contacts and building relationships in the industry they wish to work in. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It was fantastic to see from the trip one student was able to invite the MP onto his radio show and another was able to film the interview to help with her university project.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
