University Lecturer Hopes To Inspire His Students With New Acting Role On S4C
A Wrexham lecturer is the latest to join S4C’s Rownd a Rownd cast, as the soap series welcomes a new family.
Huw Garmon, who is well-known for his appearance in the Oscar-nominated film Hedd Wyn as well as popular soap series’ Pobol y Cwm and Coronation Street, returns to the soap world as his character John moves to Glanrafon.
Huw, a theatre, television and performance lecturer at Wrexham Glyndwr University, hopes his new role on the show will inspire his students.
He said: “The degree course I teach is very vocational, so I think my students will appreciate seeing their lecturer continue practicing acting professionally.”
Huw’s character John is a father-of-three going through a bitter divorce from wife Delyth, and to avoid paying his wife more money in the divorce, he decides to invest in the garage which is being sold by Alwyn following Nel’s death. Moving to the village with John, to work in the garage, is his eldest son Rhys, who is played by Meilir Rhys Williams from Llanuwchllyn.
Huw, who grew up in Anglesey, said of his character: “The big demon hanging over John is his divorce from his wife. She’s given him a hard time since leaving him and when John is introduced to the show he and his wife are in the middle of a legal battle between their solicitors. That obviously has an emotional impact on him, but he always puts a brave face on things.
“John and Rhys’ family have no connections to the other characters in the series, so Meilir and I come into the series fresh. This is great for us because it gives us the opportunity to build new relationships with the other characters. Also, in a soaps series, I enjoy not knowing what’s going to happen to my character. It feels like more of an adventure and gives you some scope to improvise as an actor.”
Huw moved to Llandudno two and a half years ago, with his wife and three children, and will continue to lecture part time at Wrexham Glyndwr University alongside his new TV role.
