Preparations for the new all through area school in the Dolgellau catchment have taken another exciting step forward. ‘Ysgol Bro Idris’ will be the official name of the 3-16 all through school that will serve the area from September 2017. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The name of the school was officially unveiled by a representation of pupils who will attend the new school that will be located in the shadow of Cader Idris which overlooks the town of Dolgellau. Pupils, the Headteacher of the new school, Jano Owen, and representatives of the shadow governing body made their way to the shores of Llyn Gafr guided by Rhys Gwynn, local Snowdonia National Park Warden. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Jano Owen said: “The announcement of the new name for the school is a very symbolic step forward in its establishment. What better way to do this than linking the name with one of the most recognizable mountains in Meirionnydd. It’s great to choose an official name which reflects the surrounding area and which has emerged from suggestions made by the communities it will serve.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The name emerged following consultation with existing schools and the wider community in the catchment area. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Helen Jones, Chair of the shadow governing body noted: “This is only the beginning of the journey for the school, but deciding on a name is very important and an exciting milestone. We will be working with pupils in the catchment area to develop a logo and create the entity to match the name from now to the end of the summer term.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

One of the pupils who walked up was Huw of Ysgol Ieuan Gwynedd, Rhydymain. He said: “We had looked forward to finding out what the name of the school would be and walking up to unveil the flag.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Education stated: “I am very pleased to see that the work is moving along well on this exciting project which will establish a long-term education model for the catchment. The Ysgol Bro Idris project will involve investing £4.3 million in improving the condition and sustainability of school buildings in the area. It is also good to see that improvements have already begun on some of the sites in the area.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

There is an opportunity for parents of children who will be attending Ysgol Bro Idris when it opens in September 2017 to meet with Jano Owen, thew headtheacher during a series of sessions in late May. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The sessions will run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at these locations: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Tuesday evening, 24 May at Ysgol Ganllwyd; ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Wednesday evening, 25 May at Ysgol Brithdir; ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Thursday evening, 26 May at Ysgol Y Gader. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
