Gwynedd schools have recently taken part in the first round of a Welsh language book competition, BookSlam organised by The Welsh Books Council. The scheme is administrated locally by Gwynedd Council’s Library Service and its aim is to celebrate reading and encourage children throughout Wales to enjoy reading books in Welsh. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

By taking part in the competition, which is open for Years 3 a 4, 5 a 6 pupils, the main purpose is to inspire children to take interest in books and to increase their literacy, interpretation, discussion and presentation skills. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Two Gwynedd schools came out on top, Ysgol Edern and Ysgol y Gelli, Caernarfon. Nel, Huw, Beca and Bronwen from Edern School won in the year 5 and 6 category, and Olwen, Elis, Alis and Beth from Y Gelli School in the year 3 a 4 category. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Sioned Rowlands, Gwynedd Schools Librarian said: “It was a privelage being able to talk about books with all the teams and to meet so many of the children, it is evident that they enjoy reading Welsh books. All the best to both teams and huge congratulations,” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The pupils will represent their schools at the National BookSlam Round held at Aberystwyth in June. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
