Police are renewing their call for people to check their tyres after a car was stopped on the A525 in Denbighshire yesterday (Wednesday, September 12th) with two completely worn tyres. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are urging people to regularly check their tyres before the winter months, after a woman who was delivering parcels in the St Asaph area was stopped and found to have two worn front tyres on her car. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

PC Nicholas Power from the Commercial Vehicle Unit, based at Llandegai said: “With it now being officially autumn it is more important than ever to check your tyre’s roadworthiness. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Ideally tyres should be checked once a month and before any long journeys. This should include checking the air pressure, overall condition and that the tread depth is at least 1.6mm. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“An easy way of doing this is to insert a 20 pence coin into a tyre’s main tread grooves to see if the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread. Repeat this in all the main grooves and at several points around the circumference. If you can see the rim of the coin when it is inserted at any point, the tyre may be illegal and should be checked by a tyre specialist immediately. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

He added: “It is essential that people are safe when out and about on the roads so it is also worth checking the tyre and remove any stones or other objects embedded in the tread and look out for any bulges, lumps or cuts.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The woman was issued with a TOR (Traffic Offence Report) which means the possibility of a £100 fine and 3 penalty points on her licence. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
