Pupils At A Llandudno School Will Be Wearing Something Yellow On Friday
Pupils at a Llandudno school will be wearing something yellow on Friday, 23rd September, to help remind parents / carers of an important message from the Highway Code.
The children from Ysgol San Sior will be driving home the message: “You MUST NOT wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers, on school entrance markings.”
#YellowDay is being used to highlight the issue after pupils on the School Council expressed concern about drivers dropping off and some parking on the Zigzags outside school.
PCSO 3470 Chris Perkins said: “It’s important that every adult bringing a child to school remembers that every child matters and they should arrive and leave school safely. By asking the pupils to wear something yellow it will hopefully raise the question in the homes as the parents/carers want to know why it’s #YellowDay?”
On Monday the School Council held a morning service to raise awareness amongst all the pupils and on Friday everyone wearing something yellow will stand on the Zigzags outside the school.
What are the yellow Zigzag lines on the road outside schools for?
Yellow Zigzag road markings have been painted outside many schools for the safety of pupils.
Drivers should not park or stop even for a short moment on these markings.
Mr Ian Jones Headteacher at Ysgol San Sior said: “Any cars stopped or parked in the restricted area can hide small children who are about to cross the road. The children may not see approaching cars, and approaching motorists may not see the children.”
“Despite the best efforts of the schools, parent-teacher associations and the council’s road safety team, a small number of parents/carers continue to stop or park illegally and dangerously on these markings.”
He added: “We all want to keep your children safe. You can help – keep the zig-zags clear.”
Do you have to drive to school?
Most children live close enough to walk or cycle to school. Please consider this option.
It’s often faster than driving and looking for a safe and legal place to park.
If you do drive, you must park safely and considerately and do not block entrances, driveways, or junctions. Morning arrival and afternoon departure of pupils inevitably results in traffic jams near schools so allow plenty of time for your journey.
Conwy County Borough Council Road Safety Officer Julie Birchall said: “If you can walk, hold your child’s hand, especially when crossing roads and teach them correct road safety skills for life. You can play your part in reinforcing the road safety education which your child receives at school.”
