Go On A Marvellous Mission To Win Roald Dahl Books!

Young readers taking part in the Roald Dahl themed summer reading challenge at local libraries can win their own collection of the author’s books by taking part in a marvellous mission around Porthcawl and Bridgend’s shops and market stalls. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

During the six-week school holiday, cards showing Quentin Blake’s famous illustrations from Dahl’s bestsellers will be hidden across the two town centres. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Children will have a list of stores and stalls to visit each week, and they’ll need to keep their eyes peeled to spot the illustrations that will be stuck in windows and propping up shop counters. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Some of the illustrated cards will also feature a letter, and when all of the letters have been found they will spell the name of a Roald Dahl character. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Once a child has completed a form with the name of that week’s character, if they hand it in at their local library they’ll win a pot of bubbles and will also be entered into the draw for the grand prize – a collection of Roald Dahl books that has been donated by traders from Bridgend Market. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The competition has been organised in partnership by Bridgend County Borough Council, the Awen Cultural Trust, Bridgend Market and the Rhiw Shopping Centre. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “As 2016 is the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth, this year’s summer reading challenge invites youngsters to read six or more of his fantastic books during the summer holidays. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This competition adds even more fun to this summer’s festivities, and I’d like to thank all of the town centre traders for their support.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Competition forms have been sent out to schools, but if your child hasn’t received one, or you need extras, more can be picked up from a dispenser in the Rhiw Shopping Centre near to the market entrance and from Porthcawl Library. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Born in Cardiff in September 1916, Roald Dahl dreamed up some of children’s literature’s most famous characters including Willy Wonka, Charlie, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits and Danny the Champion of the World. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Although he passed away in 1990, the storyteller’s continuing legacy burns as bright as ever, with the BFG becoming the latest of his books to be adapted into a blockbuster movie. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
