The planting forms part of a number of environmental projects that the school’s Pupil Council has taken part in, for which they have recently achieved their second Green Flag Award. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

It is the role of the Pupil Council to tackle different projects within the school including eco schools projects, such as the spring flower planting. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Pupil Council have also worked on a number of other eco projects including recycling of plastic milk bottles, placing boulders on grass verges and installing gates to encourage responsible parking as well as developing wild flower areas and extending their support of charities including the ‘keep a child warm’ campaign. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School’s Pupil Council consists of a pupil from each class within years 1 to 6, with a total of 18 pupils. The council also has a number of adult members including teachers, governors and the caretaker. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Mr Craig George, Head Teacher of Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School said: ““I am extremely proud of all the pupils and staff at Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School. They continually impress me with their inspirational ideas, hard work and dedication to the school. The school council and eco committee have been concerned about the decline in Bee population and felt that planting wildflower areas around the school would encourage them back. It will also help to improve the look of the school environment for the whole school community.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Keith Reynolds, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council: “Well done to Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School for achieving their second Green Flag Award as a result environmental work throughout the school. I am delighted that the pupils are being taught the importance of caring for the environment and I look forward to seeing how they continue to implement environmental projects throughout the school”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
