An opportunity to explore the making of the critically acclaimed BBC series Dickensian and a chance to quiz international Dickens experts are just some of the things on offer as a behind the scenes exhibit comes to Cardiff University. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Written by award-winning TV writer Tony Jordan (EastEnders, Life on Mars and Hustle, amongst others) and produced by Red Planet Pictures, Dickensian launched in December 2015 to critical acclaim, described as “brilliantly reimagined Dickens” by The Independent. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The event, which is hosted by the University’s School of English, Communication and Philosophy and curated by the Charles Dickens Museum and Red Planet, will give visitors a rare chance to view costumes, props, production material and parts of the set, illustrating the craft involved in creating the settings, building the atmosphere and realising the characters of Dickensian. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The exhibition will be illuminated by short talks by Louisa Price from the Charles Dickens Museum and exhibition curator and Professor Holly Furneaux from the School of English, Communication and Philosophy, who was the literary advisor to the series. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Professor Furneaux said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to bring a little piece of Dickensian to Cardiff, whether you’re a die-hard Dickens fan or simply enjoyed the series, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The event will also include an opportunity to hear from a panel of International Dickens experts, discussing the global legacy of Dickens work and the unveiling of the ‘My Dickens’ online gallery, featuring a curated collection of favourite Dickens collectables, sent in from Dickens fans around the world. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Dickensian takes place on the 30th August 2016 at Cardiff University’s Postgraduate Teaching Centre. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
