Major Phd Scholarships Awarded To Cardiff University Students

Welsh speaking students have received funding from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to study for doctorate degrees at universities across Wales for more than a decade. This year another ten, including two postgraduate students from Cardiff University, will join them. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Two PhD Scholarships of up to £18,000 a year have been awarded to two Cardiff University postgraduate students; Rhianwen Daniel from Cardiff and Megan Haf Morgans from Abergwili near Carmarthen. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhianwen will study the influences on the work of one of Wales’ foremost philosophers, the late Professor J.R. Jones under the supervision of Professor Richard Wyn Jones from the Department of Politics and Dr Huw Williams from the Department of Philosophy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Megan, who has already completed her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Cardiff University’s School of Welsh, will focus on children’s literature, under the guidance of Dr Siwan Rosser and Professor Sioned Davies in the School. Megan said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I’m delighted to have been selected for a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol research scholarship award. I look forward to beginning my Doctorate in October which focuses primarily on the relationship between language, image and meaning in illustrated children’s literature in the Welsh language. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I hope the course will give me the opportunity to present seminars and work closely with other researchers. I also hope to enrich and contribute to existing research on Welsh language children’s literature.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
