Police & Crime Panel Question New Commissioner

Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Panel has questioned the new Commissioner just days after taking up his post. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The panel, which was set up to support and scrutinise the Police and Crime Commissioner, meets every three months. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

New commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn attended their recent meeting and took questions from panel members on issues such as CCTV, the police helicopter and the appointment of a new Chief Constable. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Regarding the new Chief Constable Mr Llywelyn said: “It is vital that we have someone who will engage with our communities, and also motivate staff. Those are the two main qualities I will be looking for.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Llywelyn said he wanted to reinvest in CCTV and that he believed it was of benefit, particularly in town centres, to ensure a safe and secure environment. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

He also revealed that he had met with the National Police Air Service for a fact finding mission regarding the helicopter, and that it would be something he would pursue to ensure that the Dyfed Powys area was not forgotten in relation to that service. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Panel Chair Andy Edwards said it was a very positive first meeting and that the members were looking forward to working with Mr Llywelyn. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Edwards said: “The panel welcomed the commissioner’s commitment to a more collegiate and collaborative approach with key partners. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The appointment of a new chief Constable at the earliest opportunity will be critically important to address some of the serious shortcomings identified in recent HMI reports. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We also welcome the invitation to engage more fully with critical issues such as accountability and governance as the new commissioner turns his thoughts to addressing such issues.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The meetings are open to the press and public, and with the prior permission of the Chair, people can ask questions or make a statement in relation to a matter being considered by the panel, with the exception of personnel matters. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
