Ysgol Rhys Pritchard To Move To Pantycelyn

Ysgol Rhys Pritchard in Llandovery is to move into a new home at the former Pantycelyn school building. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Carmarthenshire County Council’s executive board approved the move at a recent meeting, and asked officers to proceed with the plans. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

All remaining pupils at the former Ysgol Pantycelyn recently moved into the new Ysgol Bro Dinefwr. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The building will now be refurbished for Ysgol Rhys Pritchard, and their current site will be sold. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “The Executive Board has been made aware of all the discussions which have already taken place in the community and the provisional work officers of the council have done with community leaders and the local county councillor. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We requested a formal report from officers, which we have now considered and agreed that the move from Ysgol Rhys Pritchard to a partly refurbished Ysgol Pantycelyn, should proceed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Officers will now be meeting with the school and the local community representatives, including the local county councillor Ivor Jackson to discuss the refurbishment of the secondary school premises. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Officers have also been asked to proceed with the sale of the Ysgol Rhys Pritchard site.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Pantycelyn site is much larger than the current Rhys Pritchard school, with larger classrooms and a hall, and playing fields. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The move and refurbishment will be carried out as part of the council’s Modernising Education Programme, which has already seen investment of over £200million in schools across Carmarthenshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It includes two new secondary schools, eight new primary schools and around 40 other major projects including refurbishments and extensions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Education executive board member Cllr Gareth Jones said: “The move for Ysgol Rhys Pritchard to Pantycelyn is very positive and is something that will provide far better accommodation and facilities for pupils. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
