Incident Update: South Wales Wood Recycling
At 03.27am on 19th September 2016, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) were called to a refuse fire at South Wales Wood Recycling, Coity, Bridgend. SWFRS responded with one appliance. It then became apparent that this was a deep seated fire of approx 3000 tons of wood chip, stack size 15m high by 20m by 100m.
Over the period of the last 2 days SWFRS has attended this incident by rotating the crews of over 70 different resources including front line fire appliances , 3 Water Bowsers, 1 Hoselayer, 1 Hydraulic Platform, 1 x High Volume Pump, Environmental Unit, Welfare Unit.
On site multi agency meetings have been carried out on a regular basis with Welsh Water, National Resources Wales, Public Health Wales, Site Owners, Police and SWFRS.
SWFRS Command room has been in operation to support the incident, monitoring weather, smoke plume, planning relief resources and continually updating internal and external stakeholders
SWFRS have found it extremely challenging to locate sustainable water sources to resolve the incident, however we now have secured a sustainable water supply from the River Ogmore approximaley 4k away from the incident, using High Volumne Pump (from our National Assets).
A water relay has been established from the river to the scene of operations using Service Water Bowsers.
The SWFRS aim is to extinguish the fire using FRS resources and on site plant and machinery. It is likely this operation will take a number of days to achieve.
Fire Investigation is on going to establish cause in consultation with other agencies.
