Monmouthshire County Council offers support for setting up youth clubs
PARENTS and community groups, including local councils, can be supported to set up their own youth clubs.
Monmouthshire County Council’s youth service has a “toolkit” to support those wanting to establish clubs in addition to the youth centres it runs in Chepstow, Caldicot, Abergavenny and Monmouth.
Youth service manager Josh Klein said it can provide support for volunteers looking to set up a club or run the club for them, if funding is provided, which he described as the “more usual option” of the two.
Support would include help with training and registration and contact with the Wales umbrella body for youth services and GAVO the Gwent group for voluntary organisations.
Mr Klein said: “The second option is we could do it for them but that costs.”
The council will employ support workers but he said it can also take time for the authority to recruit and train people.
John Crook, Labour councillor for Magor East with Undy, said the service is doing “a brilliant job” with the youth club at the Magor and Undy Community Hub and the authority should encourage all community councils to support such clubs as Magor with Undy Town Council has.
Mr Klein said: “The provision in Magor and Undy is a really good example of the toolkit where option two was used.”
