Last month, the BA (Hons) Graphic Communication team was approached to do a live brief for “10 Mill Lane”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The bar, based on Mill Lane had designed a new range of cockatils for the summer and as they had been nominated as one of the top ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

3 bars in Wales they thought it would be a great idea to team up with our students to bring the new drinks to life. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

These weren’t just any cocktails though….. each new drink designed by the bar had been influenced by a range of artists. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

This meant the new menu launch was an art exhibition with each cocktail having its own piece of art work created by the first year students on the course. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The whole of Graphic Communication year 1 students were invited to the bar where they saw the cocktails being made and they were then split into groups to draw and taste individual cocktails. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The management team then came back into the group to pick the final designs for the exhibition. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The launch night took place in Jacobs Antique Market in Cardiff, where there were 3 separate VIP openings: for press, for the drinks industry and for the students and staff of BA (Hons) Graphic Communication. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“It’s been a beautiful project” commented Emma Marshman, Academic Manager for Design. “The chosen students were invited to the launch exhibition, but 10 Mill Lane had been so impressed with the whole group, the class has been invited to their own personal cocktail master class as well!”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

She added “It’s great to see our first years embarking on such ambitious and creative projects particularly when they’re based around a live brief. The launch night was testament to the quality of our students work and just how well we continue to work with a range of industries to give our students experiences that they can take into their future careers”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
