How Trump Could Have A Positive Impact
Sir Richard Dearlove, former Head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, discussed Brexit, National Security, Trump and the ‘Special Relationship’ during a lecture at the University of South Wales.
During his tenure as Head of MI6, the service witnessed the 9/11 attacks in the US, the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, and an RPG attack on the service itself at its Vauxhall branch.
Few subjects today generate sharper reactions than that of the line democratic states tread in carrying out surveillance in the interests of protecting national security.
During his talk, Sir Richard examined a number of subjects, including:
- Why leaving the EU will have a marginal effect on national security.
- Why, although it was a shock, Trump’s election will have a positive effect on the UK’s relationship with the US.
- How Theresa May’s meeting with Donald Trump is indicative of a return of the special relationship, and how the UK will have a lot more influence in the US.
- How Europe and Nato will have to take on more responsibility for defence.
- How the positives about Brexit and Trump are being ignored.
