Minister Takes A Closer Look At USW
Alun Cairns learns how to take fingerprint marks from glass, with one of USW’s forensics students.
A UK Government Minister investigated a crime scene, treated a patient, and landed an airliner – all during a visit to the University of South Wales (USW).
Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns, who is MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, spent an afternoon at USW’s Pontypridd campus, learning more about the courses available at USW in a visit hosted by the students themselves.
After spending time in the specialist Crime Scene House, and then seeing how forensic sciences students carry out criminal investigations, Mr Cairns was then shown around USW’s dedicated Clinical Simulation Suite – where student nurses carry out training during their studies.
Then followed a visit to USW’s newly-expanded Aerospace Centre, where he was shown around the specialist aerospace engineering facilities and was able to try out the on-site flight simulator.
After the visit, the Minister said: “Welsh universities are key in the creation of a highly skilled and high value workforce contributing to a strong Welsh economy.
“The University of South Wales is a world-leading and internationally renowned centre of research in social policy and criminology and I am delighted to be able to visit today to see their excellent facilities, meet the inspiring staff and the ambitious students who believe that Welsh higher education is their ticket to a bright future.”
Professor Julie Lydon, USW Vice-Chancellor, added: “We are delighted that the Secretary of State was able to visit us, and see the fine work that we do here.
“We are the university for careers, and we pride ourselves on giving students the right skills to prepare them for their chosen profession.
“Mr Cairns saw for himself how we make a real difference, for students, employers, and the communities in our region.”
