War, Security And Terrorism
Former Head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, Sir Richard Dearlove KCMG OBE, discusses war, security and terrorism during a lecture at the University of South Wales (USW) later this month.
During his tenure as Head of MI6, the service witnessed the 9/11 attacks in the US, the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and an RPG attack on the service itself at its Vauxhall branch.
Few subjects today generate sharper reactions than that of the line democratic states tread in carrying out surveillance in the interests of protecting national security.
Sir Richard Dearlove has expressed deep concerns about the impact on civil liberties by legislative changes which facilitate the spread of surveillance. In his talk, Sir Richard will examine these and other challenges at a time when terrorist attacks by groups affiliated to ISIS have become an increased danger for European states.
The lecture is being held on Friday, January 27 at noon at USW’s Pontypridd Campus, Upper Glyntaff.
It is open to members of the public, as well as school and college groups. The lecture is part of the Global Choice: Talking Points series.
